Open Season (2024)

Hawksbills and green sea turtles travel thousands of miles to feed and nest among Grenada's offshore islands. Yet, in the face of extinction, they remain largely unprotected, enduring one of the Caribbean’s longest open hunting seasons.  Open Season is the story of a dedicated team of freediving fishermen and researchers working tirelessly to protect Grenada’s remaining sea turtles in one of the last true ocean wilderness of the Eastern Caribbean.

A film by Nicolas Winkler in association with Ocean Spirits (www.oceanspirits.org) and in collaboration with the fishermen of St. Patrick's and wildlife veterinarian Dr. Kenrith Carter, DVM. Research conducted under permit.

Diving Dangerously (2024)

In the Eastern Caribbean, a large shoal extends for more than a dozen miles off of Grenada’s southern coast. Diving Dangerously follows two fishers as they ply their trade beneath the waves, catching the conch and lobster that supply the hotels and high-end restaurants of a thriving tourism industry. This short film explores the impact that this small-scale fishery is having on generations of marine resources, and the health consequences fishermen face as they risk their lives on compressed air (scuba).

Produced and filmed by Nicolas Winkler.
